MRI in Tasmania

12 practices in Tasmania are accredited for MRI, in eleven towns and suburbs.

Six of them are outside the capital. Coverage outside the capital is comparatively good for MRI in Tasmania.

An MRI uses a magnetic field rather than x-rays, and the machines are expensive, so far fewer places have one.

Eleven of the 12 are on the Government's Medicare-eligible MRI list (last updated 17 February 2026). The remaining one hold MRI accreditation without being on that list, and a scan at one of them may attract no rebate at all.

Seven towns in Tasmania have imaging of their own but no MRI. Each of those has a page giving the nearest machine and the distance from that town — that is the number that decides whether the scan happens.

The towns and suburbs with MRI include Launceston, East Launceston, Devonport, North Hobart, Lenah Valley, Burnie, Hobart and Glenorchy.

The heaviest concentrations are Launceston (two practices), East Launceston (one practice), Devonport (one practice), North Hobart (one practice) and Lenah Valley (one practice). Outside those, most towns with MRI have exactly one practice, which is worth knowing when you are weighing a wait against a drive.
