MRI in Western Australia

Western Australia has 46 practices accredited for MRI, spread over 27 towns and suburbs.

Outside the capital there are ten. That leaves large parts of Western Australia more than an hour from the nearest one, which is what the town pages below are for.

An MRI uses a magnetic field rather than x-rays, and the machines are expensive, so far fewer places have one.

35 of the 46 are on the Government's Medicare-eligible MRI list (last updated 17 February 2026). The remaining eleven hold MRI accreditation without being on that list, and a scan at one of them may attract no rebate at all.

20 towns in Western Australia have imaging of their own but no MRI. Each of those has a page giving the nearest machine and the distance from that town — that is the number that decides whether the scan happens.

The towns and suburbs with MRI include Murdoch, Midland, Nedlands, Bunbury, Joondalup, Subiaco, Booragoon and Perth.

The heaviest concentrations are Murdoch (four practices), Midland (four practices), Nedlands (four practices), Bunbury (three practices) and Joondalup (three practices). Outside those, most towns with MRI have exactly one practice, which is worth knowing when you are weighing a wait against a drive.
