MRI in Victoria

Victoria has 140 practices accredited for MRI, spread over 91 towns and suburbs.

Outside the capital there are 40. That leaves large parts of Victoria more than an hour from the nearest one, which is what the town pages below are for.

An MRI uses a magnetic field rather than x-rays, and the machines are expensive, so far fewer places have one.

93 of the 140 are on the Government's Medicare-eligible MRI list (last updated 17 February 2026). The remaining 47 hold MRI accreditation without being on that list, and a scan at one of them may attract no rebate at all.

34 towns in Victoria have imaging of their own but no MRI. Each of those has a page giving the nearest machine and the distance from that town — that is the number that decides whether the scan happens.

The towns and suburbs with MRI include Epping, Melbourne, East Melbourne, Heidelberg, Frankston, Bundoora, Werribee and Dandenong.

The heaviest concentrations are Epping (five practices), Melbourne (four practices), East Melbourne (four practices), Heidelberg (three practices) and Frankston (three practices). Outside those, most towns with MRI have exactly one practice, which is worth knowing when you are weighing a wait against a drive.
