MRI in South Australia

There are 40 MRI practices in South Australia, across 27 towns and suburbs.

six sit beyond the capital's ring. That leaves large parts of South Australia more than an hour from the nearest one, which is what the town pages below are for.

An MRI uses a magnetic field rather than x-rays, and the machines are expensive, so far fewer places have one.

27 of the 40 are on the Government's Medicare-eligible MRI list (last updated 17 February 2026). The remaining 13 hold MRI accreditation without being on that list, and a scan at one of them may attract no rebate at all.

The towns and suburbs with MRI include Adelaide, North Adelaide, Elizabeth Vale, Modbury, Morphett Vale, Mount Barker, Bedford Park and Woodville South.

The heaviest concentrations are Adelaide (five practices), North Adelaide (four practices), Elizabeth Vale (three practices), Modbury (two practices) and Morphett Vale (two practices). Outside those, most towns with MRI have exactly one practice, which is worth knowing when you are weighing a wait against a drive.
